SAFE SPACES

SAFE SPACES •

We believe every dancer, of every level of experience, should feel absolutely comfortable, respected and safe at any of our events or classes. We aim to create a safe and welcoming scene for everyone to dance in.

Participants who do not agree with the SAFE SPACE GUIDELINES may be warned and asked to leave the event free of charge, and may not be admitted to future events. The organisers have the right not to admit unwanted persons to the event.

1. Harassment or bullying won’t be tolerated under any circumstances. By attending any of our events you agree to treat all participants with care and respect and to abide by our code of conduct. We do not discriminate on the basis of gender, gender expression or sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion or nationality. We value everyone equally regardless of age, ability, physical appearance, lifestyle, dance experience or dance role. We encourage all dancers to have the choice of leading, following or both.

2. Be respectful to others at all times. Do not use sexist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist or racist language. We respect and acknowledge that others' personal boundaries may not be the same as ours. We are fully aware of what behaviour is inappropriate and what actions may be offensive to some.

3. Always respect personal boundaries. Partner dancing can involve close contact with others and we must respect each others’ personal space. If someone tells you that you are making them feel uncomfortable, respect their requirement for space.

4. If someone asks you to dance and you don’t want to, you can say no without the need to offer any explanation. If you feel uncomfortable dancing with someone then you can stop dancing with them at any time, even halfway through a song or if you have danced previously with them. We remain polite whilst doing so.

5. If you ask someone to dance they say no, respect their decision. No one is obliged to dance with you, and no one should feel obliged to accept a dance if they don’t feel like it.

6. If you see someone who looks uncomfortable or upset, ask if they are ok and if they would like you to report any unwanted behaviour to the admin team on their behalf. If you harass someone, you may be asked to leave. You may also be banned from other events and the police may be notified at our discretion and as guided by the complainant.

7. Be safe and responsible on the dance floor. Apologise if you accidentally bump into someone else and check that they are ok. Aerials, lifts and drops  should not be carried out on a social dance floor but are welcome in a jam session or competition with consent from both partners. If we consume alcohol, we do so responsibly, and if we are drunk enough to endanger ourselves or others, we leave the dance floor.

8. Participants take care of their own decent hygiene and accept criticism positively if physical contact with them becomes unpleasant for those around them.

9. Events and lessons may be photographed and filmed. Participants may be included in the photos and videos and agree that the organisers may use this material for the purposes of promoting London Jazz Works. If the participants do not agree, they must notify the organisers londonjazzworks@gmail.com

If you are injured and require medical attention, need to pursue a concern or if you feel unsafe or threatened and would like to make the organisers aware of inappropriate behaviour, speak to one of the London Jazz Works admin team: Victoria Rooke, Fargol Parhizgar, Nicola Stewart, Jessica Miller, Ionuts Bajescu and William Fulton. We PROMISE to take any complaints consciously and sensitively and take appropriate action keeping all details as confidential as possible. If we consider the situation to be more serious than our experience can deal with, we will take appropriate action to refer the issue to appropriate professionals and act on their guidance.
